Do I need a plumber to fix a leaking toilet?
Let’s Fix Group Ltd, led by David Prince, sends its own Gas Safe registered engineers to leaking toilets across Greater London and the South East. Call or message the team and we will book you in today.
A leaking toilet can be a two minute tighten or the start of a ruined floor, and telling the two apart matters.
The Essentials
- Drips at the supply hose or float valve are often a simple washer or a tightening job.
- Water at the base of the pan or into the soil pipe needs a plumber, not a mop.
- A cistern that keeps refilling wastes water quietly and shows up on a meter.
- Leaks left alone spread into floors and ceilings, turning a small repair into a big one.
If you need an emergency plumber or emergency plumber services Croydon, we cover the whole area with our own Gas Safe registered engineers, fixed pricing agreed before work starts and 90% of repairs sorted the same day.

Do I need a plumber to fix a leaking toilet?
Sometimes, yes. A loose fitting or a worn flush washer can often be tightened or swapped at home, but a leak coming from the pan, the soil connection or the cistern inlet needs a plumber, because water tracking under a floor causes far more damage than the leak itself.
Toilet dripping, running or pooling at the base? Call Let's Fix Group Ltd and one of our own engineers will find the source and fix it, usually the same day.

Leaks you can sort yourself and leaks that need a plumber
Start by working out where the water is actually coming from. Dry everything off, lay some kitchen roll around the base and behind the cistern, then flush and watch. If the paper wets at the flexible supply hose or the isolating valve, that is usually a tightening job or a new washer. Same with a dribble from the cistern lid area, which is often a float valve that has stopped shutting off cleanly.
What you should not be doing yourself is chasing water that appears at the foot of the pan or seeping from the joint into the soil pipe. That points to a failed pan connector or a cracked pan, and both need lifting, sealing and refitting properly. A steady trickle into the bowl is a different problem again: it wastes a serious amount of water every day and it will show up on a meter long before you notice it.
If you need an emergency plumber or an emergency plumber in High Wycombe, we cover the whole area, and there are expert plumbers based across London and the South East who can be with you the same day. Nine in ten repairs are finished on that first visit.
- Do it yourself: tightening a supply hose nut, replacing a simple washer, adjusting a float.
- Call a plumber: water at the base of the pan, a wobbling pan, a cracked cistern, a leak into the ceiling below.
- Call straight away: water near electrics, a soaked floor, or a leak you cannot isolate.

What happens if a small toilet leak is left alone
A leaking toilet rarely stays small. Water runs along joists, soaks chipboard flooring and swells it, and lifts tile grout and vinyl at the edges. Upstairs, the first sign is often a stain on the ceiling below rather than anything visible in the bathroom. By then the repair has grown from a seal and a connector into floorboards and plaster.
There is also the waste. A cistern that keeps refilling overnight can run for weeks without anyone noticing, and on a metered supply that is money out of the door for nothing. The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering is clear that leaks are best dealt with early rather than monitored, and toilets are the classic example.
If you need an emergency plumber or an emergency plumber in Luton, we cover the whole area. Our own engineers use non-invasive methods such as thermal imaging and acoustic tracing to find where water is going before anything is lifted, so we are not pulling up a floor on a guess.

How we find and fix the leak, and what else we do
An engineer isolates the supply, works out the source, then repairs it: a new pan connector, a fresh flush valve or inlet valve, a reseated pan, or new pipework where a joint has gone. Where the pan or cistern is cracked, we will replace the unit rather than patch it, and we can fit the replacement on the same visit where parts allow. Our pricing is fixed and agreed before work starts, so there are no surprises added at the end.
We handle repair and installation side by side. The same team that stops a leak also fits new toilets, basins, showers and full bathrooms, so if the leak has been going long enough to ruin a floor, the follow-on work does not need a second firm. If you are searching for an emergency plumber near you, we have people covering every borough and the towns around them.
