Can all plumbers fix boilers?
Not sure whether your plumber can legally touch your boiler? Speak to Let’s Fix Group Ltd and David Prince’s team of Gas Safe engineers will diagnose the fault properly, explain the fix and get your heating running again.
“Plumber” and “boiler engineer” are not the same trade, and on a gas appliance the difference is a legal one.
What You Need To Know
- Only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on your gas boiler, whatever else they are qualified to do.
- Many plumbers hold gas registration, many do not, and the card shows which appliances they can touch.
- Non-gas plumbing work, pipework, valves, cylinders, does not need gas registration.
- Around 90% of the boiler repairs we attend are completed the same day.
David Prince heads a team of the firm’s own Gas Safe engineers across Greater London and the South East, never subcontractors. Whether you need a boiler repair or boiler repair services Croydon, we cover the whole area.

Can all plumbers fix boilers?
No. A plumber can work on pipework, taps and cylinders, but only a Gas Safe registered engineer is legally allowed to work on a gas boiler. Plenty of plumbers hold that registration as well, and plenty do not, so the qualification matters more than the job title on the van.

Gas work is a separate legal qualification
Plumbing and gas are two different competencies. A time-served plumber may be excellent on a leaking soil stack or a failed cylinder and still have no business opening the case of a combi. Anyone carrying out work on gas appliances in a home must be on the Gas Safe Register, and the engineer’s card also shows which categories of work they are competent in: boilers, cookers, fires, commercial appliances. A card alone is not a blanket permission.
That is why the sensible question is never “are you a plumber” but “are you registered for this appliance”. Whether you need a boiler repair or a boiler engineer in High Wycombe, we cover the whole area, and every engineer who attends is one of the firm’s own, never a subcontractor picked up for the day.

What a gas registered engineer does that a plumber cannot
A registered boiler engineer works to the appliance manufacturer’s data, tests gas rate and working pressure, checks the flue and its termination, confirms ventilation and analyses combustion. Those checks are what separate a boiler that runs safely from one that runs. A general plumber without gas registration can legally drain the system, replace a radiator valve or renew the condensate run, and that is genuinely useful work, but the moment the gas side is involved the job stops being theirs.
Common faults we see fall into a handful of families: ignition and flame failure, blocked condensate, faulty diverter valves, pump and fan failures, low pressure from a hidden leak, and control or PCB faults. Diagnosing those properly needs test equipment and appliance knowledge, not guesswork. Whether you need a boiler repair or a boiler engineer in Luton, we cover the whole area, with engineers based around the boroughs and towns they work in so someone can usually be with you quickly.

Where repair ends and replacement begins
Most boilers are worth fixing. Nine out of ten of the repairs we attend are finished the same day, because the vans carry the parts that fail most often and the diagnosis is done properly the first time. It is only when a heat exchanger has gone, parts are obsolete or the appliance has been repeatedly patched that replacement becomes the honest answer, and we will say so rather than sell another repair.
Our boiler repair services cover diagnosis, parts, testing and sign-off, and the same team handles full installations with a ten-year guarantee on the new appliance, so you are not passed to a different outfit if the answer turns out to be a replacement rather than a fix. Pricing is set out clearly before work starts, with no surprise added on arrival.

How the team is set up across the region
David Prince has spent over 20 years on London’s boilers and heating, and he now heads a team of the firm’s own Gas Safe engineers working across Greater London and the South East. David or one of his expert engineers will be out to you, fully insured, with modern non-invasive diagnostic equipment for tracing leaks, and the house left as it was found. There are many five-star reviews on the reviews widget from customers across the region.
- Registration, not job title: gas boiler work is restricted to Gas Safe registered engineers.
- Check the categories: the registration card lists the appliances an engineer is competent on.
- Wet plumbing is fair game: pipework, valves and cylinders do not need gas registration.
- One team, both jobs: the same engineers repair boilers and install them.
